The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has withdrawn the Super Eagles from their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya scheduled for Tuesday.
This decision comes after the team endured a frustrating 12-hour ordeal at Al Abraq International Airport in Libya, where they have been stranded since their arrival on Sunday afternoon.
While attempting to reach Benghazi for the important match, the Nigerian delegation faced unexpected challenges when their chartered flight was diverted to Al Abraq, a small airport mainly serving hajj flights.
Upon arrival, the team found themselves stranded, with no assistance from the Libyan Football Federation, which did not provide any transportation arrangements.
In a statement issued on Monday, the NFF clarified that the Super Eagles were stuck at the airport for over 12 hours and were unable to reach their hotel in Benghazi, which is situated three hours away.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Meanwhile, captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed his concerns regarding the unjust treatment the Nigerian team is experiencing in Libya, stating that they have decided to boycott the upcoming match.
In addition, the Nigerian team was prohibited from entering any hotels due to directives from the Libyan Government, which greatly angered Ekong. After discussing the situation with the team, the Al-Kholood defender announced that the Super Eagles will not participate in the game against Libya scheduled for tomorrow.
