Ismaeel Ahmed mentioned that the President has made tough decisions causing discomfort, with everyone feeling the impact. He emphasized that the President should not solely bear the blame.
Amidst the challenges faced by Nigerians such as high living costs and increased commodity prices, Ismaeel Ahmed from the All Progressives Congress (APC) defended President Bola Tinubu, stating that he should not be held responsible for the country’s economic challenges.
Ahmed, a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, highlighted that the administration’s difficult choices were crucial for the nation’s economic recovery.
"Difficult decisions have been made. These decisions were not only unexpected during the campaign, not just by President Bola Tinubu but also by other candidates," he stated.
“We are facing a need for realignment. The President has made tough choices, causing discomfort and affecting us all. However, I cannot attribute blame to the President.”.
Ever since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu has implemented a series of reforms to rejuvenate the economy and encourage investment. However, these efforts have resulted in a temporary increase in living expenses.
The President has implemented challenging economic policies, such as discontinuing fuel subsidies, leading to higher living and transportation expenses.
Tinubu has also adjusted the naira exchange rate by eliminating multiple exchange rates, causing a significant devaluation of the national currency.
The APC leader mentioned that before the presidential election on February 25, 2023, both Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had pledged to eliminate fuel subsidies and standardize the exchange rate.
Although Tinubu has only been in office for a year, there are political strategies being discussed for the upcoming electoral period. Rumors are circulating about discussions between Atiku and Obi. In response to this, Ahmed noted that this development is not unexpected, affirming that his party will continue to provide the benefits of democracy to the Nigerian people.
“It's not unexpected; I don't see why it's such a significant issue. As a party in power, we welcome the prospect of having a robust opposition to challenge us and uphold the principles of democracy.
“Nigerians will decide based on their knowledge of the candidates vying for different offices. I anticipate a strong opposition, which is crucial, as we haven’t experienced that since taking office.”
