The bill proposing an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to establish new Oyo and Ibadan States has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
Sponsored by Akeem Adeyemi, son of the late Alafin Adeyemi, along with six co-sponsors, the bill aims to create Oyo State with Oyo town designated as its capital, while the remainder will form Ibadan State, with Ibadan city as its capital.
The constitutional amendment bill was advanced during the plenary session on Tuesday, where it received approval for its second reading.
This proposal includes the division of the existing 33 local governments, which will be allocated between the two new states.
Following this, the bill has been referred to the Constitutional Review Committee for further legislative consideration.
