The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reopened runway 18L/36R at Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos for flight operations. The runway was temporarily closed due to a Dana Air plane skidding off it on Tuesday.
Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection at FAAN, announced the reopening via a statement. FAAN’s emergency response team promptly evacuated and recovered the aircraft. Comprehensive clearing operations were conducted to ensure the runway was free of any debris that could affect flight safety.
FAAN’s Operations Division and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) inspected the runway surface and deemed it safe for operations. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued accordingly.
Efforts were made to clean the muddy area significantly affected by the overshoot to facilitate the swift resumption of operations. FAAN expressed gratitude to the public, airline partners, and stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the closure.
The incident involved a Dana Air plane with registration number 5N-BKI overshooting the runway during landing.
