On Tuesday, the Federal Government banned single-use plastics in ministries, departments, and agencies. Minister of State for Environment, Iziaq Salako, announced this during a press briefing at the Presidential Villa following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
Salako explained that the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management, adopted in 2020, aims to ban certain categories of plastics by January 2025, including single-use items like plastic spoons, straws, PET bottles, and water sachets. He emphasized that the government is leading by example and preparing Nigerians for this transition. The ban aligns with efforts to combat climate change, biodiversity loss, and plastic pollution, which pose significant challenges in the country.
Plastic waste often clogs drains, contributes to flooding, and pollutes oceans, negatively impacting human health and the environment, the minister added. In a similar move, the Lagos State Government banned single-use plastics and Styrofoam in January.
