Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, on Tuesday departed for Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, in preparation for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
This training camp will help the squad acclimate ahead of the prestigious global competition, scheduled from October 16 to November 3, 2024.
Nigeria has been placed in Group A, where they will compete against the host nation, the Dominican Republic, along with Ecuador and New Zealand.
Under the leadership of coach Bankole Olowookere, the team will engage in an intensive two-week training camp in the Dominican Republic before the tournament kicks off.

He earlier announced a 21-player squad for this year’s competition, with captain Taiwo Afolabi at the forefront. The team’s offensive efforts will be led by standout forwards Harmony Chidi and Peace Effiong.
Notably, Harmony Chidi played a crucial role in Nigeria’s qualification, scoring 13 of the Flamingos’ 25 goals during the qualifiers.
The Flamingos boast a rich history in the tournament, having reached the quarterfinals three times and achieving a remarkable semifinal appearance in 2022, where they defeated the USA in a penalty shootout.
