Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has taken decisive action by signing three executive orders aimed at safeguarding consumers, the environment, and public infrastructure. Executive Order No. 2 of 2024 targets community and environmental protection, emphasizing the urgent need to address illegal tree felling, a practice exacerbating environmental degradation and security concerns in the region. Governor Mohammed stressed the necessity of implementing this order rigorously to combat activities like charcoal selling and unauthorized deforestation, which have been facilitated by collusion among forestry officers, local authorities, and various levels of leadership.
Furthermore, Executive Order No. 2 introduces a standardized system of weights and measures across Bauchi State to protect consumers from inconsistent and deceptive practices by traders. The Governor underscored the prevalence of differing measures in markets, leading to unfair treatment of consumers, and emphasized the importance of prosecuting those who continue to use outdated measures. This measure aims to ensure fairness and transparency in trade across all local government areas, towns, and villages within the state.
Lastly, Executive Order No. 3 of 2024 prohibits the construction of illegal structures along road corridors, green areas, and utility zones within Bauchi State. Governor Mohammed highlighted the security and environmental risks posed by such encroachments, with some structures being exploited by criminal elements. The Governor pledged to provide alternative locations for affected traders while reiterating his commitment to enforcing these orders rigorously, including prosecuting individuals or businesses found in violation.
