Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has officially taken her oath as the 23rd substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), following her confirmation by the Senate last Wednesday clear the path for her ascension to the highest position in Nigeria’s judiciary.
The ceremony, administered by President Bola Tinubu occurred on Monday at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, attended by numerous dignitaries and judicial figures.
Justice Kekere-Ekun now becomes the second woman to hold this prestigious role, following Justice Alooma Muktar, who served as CJN from 2012 to 2014.
The event was a significant milestone, attended by three of Justice Kekere-Ekun’s distinguished predecessors: Justice Alooma Muktar, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, and Justice Walter Onnoghen. Also present was Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, her immediate predecessor.
Justice Kekere-Ekun’s family and fellow justices of the Supreme Court joined in celebrating this noteworthy achievement, marking the dawn of a new era for Nigeria’s judiciary.
During the oath-taking, President Tinubu underscored the judiciary’s vital role in upholding the rule of law and fostering public trust in governance.
He expressed his confidence in Justice Kekere-Ekun’s capacity to lead with integrity, fairness, and wisdom, especially as the nation navigates various legal and constitutional challenges.
