The Rivers State Chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has strongly criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara for allegedly withholding funds designated for the Local Governments. Speaking collectively during a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the Chairman of Port Harcourt LGA, Allwell Ihunda, accused the governor of holding back allocations intended for the LGAs, dating as far back as April, with Emohua being affected since March.
Ihunda further asserted that there were suspicions that the governor aimed to divert the funds allocated to the local governments for other purposes. This accusation comes amidst concerns of financial autonomy and resource allocation within the state’s governance framework. The ALGON representatives called on President Tinubu to intervene and rein in Governor Fubara to prevent a potential escalation of tensions leading to a breakdown of law and order in Rivers State.
During the interactive session, the Chairman of Andoni LGA stated his intention to remain in office for an additional 6 months after the conclusion of his tenure, citing provisions within the amended Local Government law. This assertion underscores the complex dynamics surrounding local governance and adherence to legal frameworks within the state’s administrative structure.
