The Abia State government and the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have launched a coordinated campaign against fake drugs, substandard foods, and other unhealthy products in the state. This initiative was unveiled at a stakeholders meeting organized by the Ministry of Digital Economy in collaboration with NAFDAC and SME business leaders in Aba. During the event, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, shared her personal loss of a brother due to bad antimalarial medicine and assured that NAFDAC would intensify its efforts to eradicate harmful products.
Prof. Adeyeye emphasized the significance of engaging with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the fight against counterfeit drugs and substandard foods, noting that their efforts were already yielding positive results. She reaffirmed NAFDAC’s commitment to protecting public health and ensuring that harmful products are removed from the market.
Representing the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu highlighted the necessity of NAFDAC’s role in ensuring the safety of consumables for residents and protecting genuine entrepreneurs from those who profit from counterfeit products. Additionally, the Commissioner for Digital Economy and SMEs, Matthew Ekwuribe, mentioned that Dr. Otti is implementing plans to ensure regulatory compliance across all sectors.
