The national grid has once again experienced a collapse, as reported by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The national grid encountered a partial disturbance on November 5, 2024, at approximately 1:52 PM.
On February 4, 2024, Nigeria experienced its first blackout of the year when the national grid collapsed around 11:51 AM. Managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the grid’s capacity drastically decreased from 2,407 megawatts to a mere 31 megawatts by noon, culminating in a complete shutdown by 1 PM.
Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu remarked last month that grid failures have become nearly inevitable due to the deteriorating state of the nation’s power infrastructure.
He emphasised the necessity of establishing independent power grids in various regions or states to mitigate the recurring grid collapses.
According to the minister, implementing multiple power grids across regions and states would promote stability in the power supply.
He highlighted that the decentralisation of the power sector would facilitate the establishment of these regional grids, a move made feasible by the Electricity Act signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in 2023.
