Bayern Munich’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer described his late howler in the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid as “extremely bitter,” leading to his side’s elimination from the tournament.
Despite holding a 1-0 lead with just two minutes remaining, courtesy of Alphonso Davies’ goal, a simple shot from Vinicius Junior caused Neuer to spill the ball, allowing Joselu to equalize. Real Madrid eventually won 2-1, advancing to the final against Borussia Dortmund.
Neuer admitted, “It’s extremely bitter for me,” acknowledging the unexpected mistake. Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel labeled the error as uncharacteristic, emphasizing Neuer’s overall stellar performance. Defender Matthijs de Ligt echoed this sentiment, stating that Neuer was unlucky after making several world-class saves throughout the match.
Despite the disappointment, Neuer, who recently returned from injury, is poised to represent Germany in the upcoming Euros. The defeat marked Bayern’s first trophyless season since 2012.
