The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced its decision to prolong the ongoing nationwide strike initiated on Monday, pending the outcome of a pivotal meeting with its organs scheduled for Tuesday. Asserting their stance, the NLC emphasized that the strike will persist until further directives are received from the organizational meeting set for June 4th.
This declaration from the NLC follows a meeting convened by the Federal Government with various labour unions, including the Trade Union Congress (TUC), aimed at resolving the strike. Despite extensive discussions, the NLC revealed that the government has consented to a minimum wage exceeding N60,000, marking a significant development. The parties have agreed for the tripartite committee to convene daily over the next week to reach a consensus on a national minimum wage.
Signed jointly by the Presidents of the NLC and TUC, Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo respectively, the statement assured workers that no victimization would occur due to their participation in the industrial action. Consequently, the strike’s impact has been palpable across various sectors, including businesses, airports, schools, banks, and public institutions, with operations substantially disrupted on Monday.
