The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed disappointment with the federal government’s silence regarding the April 3 electricity tariff hike. Following its National Executive Council meeting, where it suspended an indefinite strike for one week, the NLC emphasized the need for concrete action on the reversal of the electricity tariff hike, despite the government’s agreement to a higher minimum wage exceeding N60,000.
Despite the government’s announcement of a minor reduction in tariff for Band A customers, bringing it down to N208.80kwh, the NLC, alongside the Trade Union Congress and other organizations, insists on a complete reversal of the electricity tariff hike. The NLC highlights the critical importance of addressing both the wage increase and the electricity tariff hike, considering the financial burden on Nigerian workers and the general populace.
Since the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved the tariff increment on April 3, reactions among Nigerians have been strong. The NLC’s stance reflects widespread dissatisfaction with the current state of electricity tariffs and the classification of consumers into Bands, urging the government to take decisive action in addressing these issues.
