On Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu joined Nigerians in celebrating the 2024 Democracy Day at Eagle Square in Abuja. The President inspected the Guard of Honour and observed the annual parade, marking his second Democracy Day in office.
Among the dignitaries present were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Femi Gbajabiamila, and various service chiefs. Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 in honor of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, and other democracy heroes.
In his Democracy Day speech, President Tinubu paid tribute to Abiola and other democracy heroes, urging Nigerians to support his administration’s efforts to strengthen the economy. He also announced that a bill for a new minimum wage would soon be sent to the National Assembly, among other initiatives.
